Nasionalberita.com – Exactly 78 years ago, the tragedy of the atomic bombs struck Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japan commemorates this moment once again. In the series of events, the nation also reaffirms its concern regarding the nuclear project risks undertaken by Russia.
On Sunday (8/6/2023), around 140,000 lives were lost in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, followed by 74,000 deaths in Nagasaki three days later. At that time, the atomic bombs were dropped by the United States on two Japanese cities, just a few days before the end of World War II. Japan endured profound suffering as a consequence of this atomic bomb tragedy.
“The fact that Japan stands as the only country to have experienced the horrors of atomic bombs during the war will continue to motivate us towards advancing a world agenda free from nuclear threats,” said Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, during the ceremony held in Hiroshima.
On this occasion, Fumio Kishida also expressed his concerns about the efforts towards nuclear disarmament and the threats posed by Russia.
“We recognize that the path towards a nuclear-free future is increasingly complex due to the deepening divisions in the international arena regarding nuclear disarmament and the Russian threat,” stated Kishida.
“In the midst of this context, it is crucial for us to restore a global spirit of collaboration in realizing a world free from nuclear threats,” he added.
Kishida hopes that the suffering endured by Hiroshima and Nagasaki will never be repeated.
“We are determined to prevent the recurrence of the catastrophe that befell Hiroshima and Nagasaki through nuclear disarmament,” Kishida emphasized, whose family has roots in Hiroshima.
During this commemorative ceremony, thousands of attendees, including survivors, victims’ families, and representatives from 111 nations, gather to pray for those who lost their lives or suffered due to the tragedy and to call for global peace.
However, both Russia and Belarus were not present at the ceremony for the second consecutive year, primarily due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The participants of the ceremony, many dressed in all black, unite in prayer at 8:15 AM local time.
Furthermore, Kishida also endeavors to promote the critical issue of nuclear disarmament and the achievement of global peace. He also invites leaders of democratic and prosperous nations to visit the memorial and peace park museum in Hiroshima, in order to commemorate the event.
