Nasionalberita.com – As the global spotlight turns to the controversial act of burning the Quran, Muslim residents in Denmark are voicing their distinct perspectives.
Their reaction goes beyond mere condemnation; they are stressing that the Danish Government should address this issue with greater seriousness and not perceive it as an expression of freedom.
Leaders of the Muslim community in Denmark acknowledge the government’s move to prohibit the burning of the Quran as a positive step. However, they deem this action to be merely scratching the surface of a more intricate problem within Danish society.
“The issue of burning the Quran has become commonplace in the eyes of Muslim residents in Denmark… In fact, the entire controversy started on Danish soil,” states Urfan Zahoor, spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Denmark (DMU), the largest umbrella organization for Muslim associations and mosques in the country.
“For years, we have endeavored to convince politicians that actions like this should not be recognized as part of democracy. However, for some reason, our efforts have not yielded results,” Zahoor asserts.
Regarding the argument of freedom of expression, Zahoor emphasizes that every community and country has its “own limits.”
“There are things that some countries do not wish to be insulted, such as kings or queens, Holocaust denial, or burning the flags of foreign nations,” he clarifies.
“Each country has the right to determine its own norms. We aim to persuade everyone that the society in Denmark, which is also our part, should evolve into an environment where minority groups are not targeted,” Zahoor adds.
Even though Muslims make up only about 5% of Denmark’s total population of around 6 million, the country remains sensitive to Muslim-related issues, alongside countries like France and Austria. This fact was revealed in the European Islamophobia Report 2022.
From discriminatory laws to actual acts of aggression and violence, the Muslim community in Denmark has repeatedly voiced their concerns about the rising wave of Islamophobia in the country.
In response to the recent incident involving the Quran attack, community leaders hope for more substantial changes, rather than superficial measures that focus solely on one aspect.
